We introduce ourselves

We've come a long way since Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA in 1943. From its beginnings as a small Swedish company that sold its goods through a mail-order catalogue, IKEA has grown into one of the most recognisable home furnishings brands in the world. Today, there are hundreds of IKEA stores around the globe, with more to come.

Our great passion is home living. Our culture is built on enthusiasm, togetherness and a "we get it done" attitude. We are optimists and are always looking for new, better ways of working, from how we design a rocking chair that fits into a flat package to LED lights that are affordable for everyone. Our vision is to create a better everyday life for the countless people we serve – not only our customers, but also our employees and the people who work for our suppliers.

In Switzerland, we employ almost 3,000 people at 9 IKEA stores, a distribution centre and units of the Ingka Group. Of these 3,000 people, 124 are completing an apprenticeship at IKEA, so every day they get to experience how exciting it is to work for an international company.

We offer the following apprenticeships:

  • Sales (EFZ/EBA)
  • Logistics (EFZ/EBA)
  • Polydesigner/in 3D EFZ
  • Systemgastronomiefachmann/frau EFZ
  • pre-apprenticeship Sales
  • pre-apprenticeship Logistics

What employees say

“When I first walked into IKEA, I was afraid that I wouldn’t meet the expectations of such a company. But thanks to IKEA, I learned to overcome my initial insecurities and just be myself. I can be sociable, I can be stubborn, I can be thoughtful, I can experience highs and lows. But that’s just me and I'm ok with that.

I’ve met a lot of experienced people who not only enhance my skills, but also provide reassurance and encouragement. I can always rely on them and see them as my role models.

During the pandemic, I have found that the closeness of the company helps to alleviate the frustrations the virus brings with it. I am extremely grateful to this company and to everyone who is part of it!”

What defines us

We are a diverse group of down-to-earth, open-minded people who all have one thing in common: a passion for home furnishings. We come from all parts of the world, but share the same inspiring vision: "To create a better everyday life for everyone."

Everything is based on togetherness and enthusiasm. We work hard, but always have fun, and we are always looking for people who share our positive attitude and values. We believe that everyone has something valuable and unique to offer. This makes us all equal.

"Taking responsibility" is an important part of our apprentice training. Apprentices take responsibility for their work, their training and their development at an early stage. They are accompanied by vocational trainers and the network that links them to all the other apprentices helps them to achieve their own goals.

Highlights from the measures taken

Supporting our apprentices with targeted measures is very important to us, which is why the corresponding solutions look different for each apprenticeship.

In the area of sales, for example, preparation days are held for the inter-company courses and regular sales meetings are held and recorded in writing in preparation for the practical final examination. Our logistics apprentices have the opportunity to complete the forklift course with our in-house certified trainers and practice the procedures again before the qualification process.

We are always looking for opportunities to promote cross-departmental projects, as collaboration between apprentices from different apprenticeships provides an opportunity to discuss common issues and support one another.

Since needs are always individual, we constantly supplement or adapt our apprenticeships on offer and, if necessary, design them with individual apprentices.

Career and jobs

Application tips

Our recruiting is based on IKEA values. This means that we are not necessarily searching for the best CVs or certificates, but we are looking for people who fit in with IKEA. In addition to your CV, the following documents are therefore important to us:

  • Letter of motivation: To give us an idea of who you are and what is important to you, it is very important for us that you tell us in your letter of motivation why you would like to do an apprenticeship at IKEA, why the apprenticeship job excites you so much and what you feel are your defining qualities.
  • References: Although this is not the most important factor for hiring, we need to get an overview of whether the requirements for the apprenticeship match your previous knowledge.
  • Trial apprenticeship reports, work samples, etc.: Would you like to show us what you are good at or what experience you have already gained? Share with us anything you feel is interesting.

You can find more information at: www.ikea.ch/berufsbildung
